Wasteland dress code for couples: what to wear and what to expect?
Wasteland is an international fetish party where music, theatre, art, sexual freedom and extravagant outfits come together. The party has been running since 1994 and is among the best-known and longest-running fetish events in the world.
If you're thinking of going, you probably want to know more than just which materials are allowed. Can you simply visit Wasteland as a dance party? Is it a sex party? How intense are the shows? What does the mixed straight, gay and queer crowd mean for you? And how do you avoid being turned away by the door bitch?
In this guide you will get an honest impression of the atmosphere, the various editions and the Wasteland dress code. This will help you to better determine whether the party suits you and to prepare an outfit with more confidence.

I have visited Wasteland Amsterdam in the North Sea Venue several times and have also been to Wasteland Berlin and Summerfest. Because of this, I can not only tell you what is officially communicated, but also what I have experienced myself on the dance floors, during the shows and around the dress code.
At VoyeurX we also talk to customers who are putting together their outfit for Wasteland. We regularly see the same misconception there: people think that creative freedom means that a complete mesh look with a leather harness will automatically be allowed. That is not the case. At Wasteland too, the overall look remains decisive.

What kind of fetish party is Wasteland?
Wasteland is a fetish fantasy event in which visitors are not merely spectators, but become part of the visual world themselves. Each edition centres on a theme that is reflected in the sets, performances and outfits.
Of all the Dutch fetish parties I’ve been to, Wasteland feels the most distinctive to me. Whilst other parties may feel more like a big dance party with a kinky dress code, at Wasteland fantasy, transformation and fetish performance take centre stage much more clearly.
You’ll find various dance floors, theatrical acts, body painting, art, massage, lounges and dungeon areas. The exact programme varies depending on the edition and venue.
That is what makes Wasteland intense, but also special. It’s not just about showing as much skin as possible or wearing a single leather item. The evening invites visitors to reveal a side of themselves for which there is little room in everyday life.
For me, that’s the appeal of Wasteland. You can dress in a sensual and extravagant way and step into a world together where creative self-expression isn’t seen as strange, but is in fact part of the evening.
Is Wasteland a sex party, or can you just dance there?
Wasteland does not describe itself as a sex party. Nor does it rule out sex and visible intimacy.
You can dance all evening, watch shows and move around the different rooms without taking part in any sexual activities yourselves. Nobody expects you to do anything just because it’s happening around you elsewhere.
During my visits, I have sometimes witnessed sexual activity, including between men. When I didn’t want to watch, I would look away or walk on to another spot.
There may be plenty to see at Wasteland, but you’re still the ones who decide where to stay, what to look at and what becomes part of your evening.
How intense are the shows at Wasteland?
The performances at Wasteland can go beyond dance, burlesque or a standard erotic stage act. Depending on the edition, you may come across suspension acts, needle acts, bondage, circus acts, body art and other physically intense shows.
I have seen hook suspension myself, where a performer was suspended from hooks, and needle acts. Even after multiple visits, I found it intense to watch.
It’s good to know in advance that acts like this may form part of Wasteland. If a performance isn’t to your taste, you don’t have to watch it. The different venues give you the freedom to choose for yourselves where you’d like to spend the evening.
Who are coming to Wasteland?
Wasteland is not exclusively aimed at heterosexual couples. Singles and couples are welcome and the crowd consists of straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and other open-minded visitors.
That diversity is more evident than at many parties attended mainly by straight couples. Personally, I think that’s one of the great things about Wasteland. It creates a different dynamic, with more variety in clothing and greater freedom in how people choose to present themselves.
A man in a heterosexual couple may be approached or notice another man’s flirtatious behaviour. That does not mean anything is expected of him. Interest is never automatic consent.
Unwanted physical contact and any form of harassment are prohibited under the house rules. The same boundaries apply to everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
It might be a good idea to have a quick chat beforehand about how you both deal with attention from others. That way, a compliment or a friendly gesture won’t cause any unexpected tension between you.
Is Wasteland a good choice for a first fetish party?
Wasteland might be your first fetish party, but it is not the most cautious introduction to the ‘scene’.
The striking outfits, overt sexuality, dungeon areas and physically intense performances can make quite an impression. If you’re mainly interested in dancing and fetish clothing, Wasteland may feel more overwhelming than a party where music and entertainment take centre stage.
At the same time, you don’t have to take part in anything. Wasteland might be a good fit for you if you’re curious about creative self-expression, are open to a diverse audience, and accept that there may be things on display that you wouldn’t choose for yourselves.
So you don't need to be comfortable with everything. The most important thing is that you give each other the space to indicate what does and doesn't suit your evening.
What editions of Wasteland are there?
Each of the different Wasteland editions has its own atmosphere and dress code. You should therefore always check the rules for the edition for which you are buying tickets.
Wasteland Amsterdam
Wasteland Amsterdam is the major indoor event taking place at the North Sea Venue on Hemkade in Zaandam. This year’s event features various dance floors, performance stages, dungeon areas, lounges and other forms of entertainment.
The dress code centres on fetish fantasy and transformation. Everyday clothing and casual clubwear are not permitted.
Wasteland Berlin
Wasteland Berlin takes place at the KitKatClub. The dress code is broadly similar to that in Amsterdam, but the organisers are giving more scope for experimental creativity at this underground edition.
During my visit, this edition felt more free-spirited and underground. The venue and the audience give the evening a different energy to that of the larger event at the North Sea Venue.
In Berlin, too, a smart outfit remains a must. Just because there’s more creative freedom doesn’t mean ordinary clubwear will do.
Wasteland Summerfest
Summerfest is the summer outdoor edition set in a post-apocalyptic world. Here, fabrics, weathered mesh, tactical details and military-inspired elements can all form part of your outfit, as long as they clearly tie in with the theme.
Think of a post-apocalyptic warrior, desert nomad, cyberpunk or Mad Max-inspired look. A regular fabric garment without that transformation still does not cut it.
The ground at the current venue is sandy. The organisers therefore advise against wearing high heels. Please choose shoes in which you can walk, stand and dance outdoors.
Wasteland Halloween Ball
The Halloween Ball takes place at RADION in Amsterdam and combines fetish with a dark Halloween fantasy.
For this edition, lace, feathers and fabric can be accepted when they are part of a compelling creation. Think of a dark fairytale, voodoo, vampire, demon, burlesque, carnival or a mysterious masquerade look.
A standard Halloween costume or ordinary black party wear is not automatically sufficient. Here too, Wasteland looks for fantasy, creativity and transformation.
What is the dress code for Wasteland Amsterdam?
The Wasteland dress code is strict, but works differently from a dress code that is assessed solely on the basis of a material percentage.
Leather, latex, rubber and PVC are the safest materials if you are in doubt. In addition, Wasteland accommodates metal, plastic, body art, uniforms and various theatrical fetish styles.
Think of fetish glamour, fetish animal, burlesque, medical, goth, steampunk, baroque, crossdress and other imaginative creations. Ordinary clothing, casual clubwear and normal combat or army outfits are not permitted at Wasteland Amsterdam.
A simple black leather, latex or rubber outfit can fit within the basics. Wasteland simply encourages visitors to go beyond just the right material. The complete look must show that you are consciously participating in the world of the party.
Therefore, do not only ask yourself: “Is this material permitted?”
Also ask the question: “Would I be able to wear this complete outfit to a regular party without drawing too much attention?”
If the answer is yes, there is a good chance that the look for Wasteland has not yet been developed far enough.
Is the dress code for Wasteland easier than at other fetish parties?
Wasteland offers more creative freedom, but that doesn't make the dress code any easier.
At a party with a strict dress code, it is relatively easy to check how much of the outfit consists of leather, patent leather or latex. Wasteland offers more possibilities, but at the same time expects the overall look to be convincing.
An outfit may technically contain a permitted leather component and still be rejected because the rest looks too much like lingerie, clubwear or everyday clothing.
The creative freedom lies in the way you bring a fantasy to life. This can be done with a mask, head accessory, body art, striking cuffs, metalwork, shape, volume or a strong combination of materials.
Not everything needs to happen at the same time. It must, however, be clear that the outfit has been deliberately put together for Wasteland.
Can you wear mesh or regular lingerie to Wasteland?
At VoyeurX we see customers who think Wasteland is easier, because there is more room for self-expression. Yet customers have been refused at the door because mesh visually remained the basis of their outfit.
A leather harness does not automatically turn a full mesh or lingerie look into a Wasteland outfit. The allowed and theatrical part must define the overall appearance.
We cannot emphasise this often enough: a harness over regular lingerie or a full mesh body is not a safe choice for Wasteland Amsterdam.
At Summerfest, weathered mesh and other fabrics might fit in when they are clearly part of a well-developed post-apocalyptic creation. The dress code of Summerfest should therefore not be automatically applied to Wasteland Amsterdam.
How strictly does the door bitch check at Wasteland?
The dress code at Wasteland is strictly enforced. The door bitch assesses the complete look and, according to the organisation, may also physically check the material of the clothing.
It is not just about how much skin is visible. Creativity, material, transformation and the overall look and feel all play a part.
The decision of the doorbitch is final. If you are not admitted because your outfit does not meet the requirements, the ticket will not be refunded.
According to official information, there is a shop at the entrance where another item can be purchased if necessary. Consider that as a last resort and not as part of your preparation.
Are you in doubt? Then choose a clear basis of leather, latex, rubber or PVC and always check the dress code for your specific edition.
What do you wear to Wasteland?
You now know which materials and fantasy directions fit within Wasteland. But that doesn't yet give you a complete outfit with which to appear confidently before the door bitch and move freely through the night.
Our solution starts with a leather harness. Leather clearly falls within the dress code, and the harness shapes the complete look without restricting your movement. At Wasteland, a harness alone isn't the full fantasy, but it is a strong frame that you can build further around.
Your outfits don't have to be identical. At Wasteland, it often looks better when you look like you come from the same fantasy world, but each play your own role within it.

Is Wasteland only for couples?
No. Wasteland is accessible to couples and singles. Everyone is welcome as long as the dress code and rules of conduct are respected.
Where is Wasteland Amsterdam organised?

What music is played at Wasteland?
Wasteland features several music areas. You can expect house, electro, techno and techhouse, among other genres. Depending on the edition, disco, classical music or live performances are also added to the programme.
Can you change your clothes at Wasteland and are there lockers?
Yes. At Wasteland Amsterdam, there is a locker area where you can change. There are no separate private changing rooms. Facilities may vary per edition and location.
Are you allowed to take photos at Wasteland?
No. Wasteland prohibits the taking of photos and videos to protect the privacy and free self-expression of visitors. Only official photographers and filmmakers with a recognisable badge are permitted to record.
What is the minimum age for Wasteland?
The minimum age is 21 years. Always check the age requirements for the chosen edition and bring a valid ID.
Does Wasteland have a VIP area?
No. According to the official FAQ, a separate VIP area does not fit the freedom and inclusivity that Wasteland wants to promote.
Where do you buy tickets for Wasteland?
Tickets are sold via the official website and via sales outlets mentioned by Wasteland. When an edition is sold out, the organisation refers to TicketSwap as a safe option for resale.
